A frequent cause of concern among students and parents is the need for braces, etc. With rare exception, braces are not a problem when it comes to playing a band instrument. True, there is a time period of adjustment (typically two or three weeks); but with at least 80% of students requiring braces at one time or another, this is a necessary challenge that all bands must work around. The main thing to consider is when to get braces. If at all possible schedule orthodontic work at least one month prior to any performance and preferably over the summer months. Through careful, guided practice your student should be fine after getting their braces.
